I looove sushi, You should definitely try some Dave. To begin with I wouldn’t go for sashimi (raw fish on it’s own) but perhaps something like a maki roll - which has a small bit of fish with rice and the seaweed casing. Dip it in a lashing of soya sauce and (if you like horseradish) a tiny bit of the green paste, wasabi.
If you’re not feeling terribly brave start on the vegetarian stuff but yes you most definitely need to try it - the fresher the better. Go somewhere you can pick bits off the conveyor belt and don’t be afraid to ask what stuff is! -

Hi David,
I would suggest trying GOOD sushi to start with as a bad experience might put you off for life. Sushi is one of the most delicious foods around, but it has to be very fresh to be good.
There is a Japanese woman in Wimbledon who provides Sushi & Sashimi Classes at her home, I have been to her classes, and her sushi is second to none. Her name is Reiko Hashimoto of Hashi Cooking (hashicooking.co.uk). You will not only eat a lot of sushi there, and take some home but you will also learn how to make them.
Unlike what a lot of people think, sushi is not an expensive dish and a little goes a very long way - i now make sushi at home whenever i have friends coming around for dinner and they all love it.
Let me know if you ever get to try some!

I love making sushi at home but to be honest find it a bit of a schlep and a lot easier to just fork out the cash for a greedy little lunch or dinner when I can. Though I did gain a sense of achievement when I made my own - so everyone should definitely try it. How much are the courses Luiz?

I'm really curious - did you try sushi yet? Did you enjoy it
I'm a sushi nut - as you can ask anyone i work with or am friends with, so often i end up trying to convert people to the sushi way. A method that i find works really well is to take them to a good restaurant, definitely not supermarket sushi - and start them off with vegetarian maki, to get them used to the texture and seaweed taste, then on to prawn, which overcomes their objection to raw fish and then on to salmon or tuna maki - If i can get them that far, then nigiri is next and finally the jump to sashimi. On the flip side i love making sushi at home - but i either make waaaaay too much and we end up eating sushi for days or i take the lazy way out and just make chirashi sushi....
Urbanite:I have to agree - no matter how many times i do it, it still gives me a great sense of achievementjulesgrimm a modifié cet avis 28 octobre 2009

Gosh, I hope Dave didn't have some poisonous puffer fish on his first go and is no longer with us!
So, What is your favourite sushi type?
I can't have sushi without some clean cut sashimi, not a fan of the fashion sandwiches but must say the California rolls with tempura'd prawns are a favourite. I doubt you'd get these in Japan, mind :) -

Salmon skin rolls, broiled eel (they have a nicer name for it), and some crab concoction that is easier to point at than say. When we are in LA, they have more sushi bars than McDonalds, so I wouldn't dream of making it. Plus the fact that buying fish is a complete mystery (aren't all fish sellers out to get the rest of us?).

It's not really sushi - and the restaurant no longer exists, so this is actually a completely pointless post - but there used to be a place on Tottenham Court Road called Ikkyu that did a dish with the uninspiring name "grilled tentacles".
And that's what they were... tiny octopus arms, grilled then seasoned with what tasted like a sort of rice wine vinegar. I could have eaten a Mediterranean Sea full of them. Bloody gorgeous.
Plain horse mackerel sashimi. It rules. Keep your tuna and salmon.
