all you can eat buffet restaurant, bellagio - Las Vegas

Las Vegas

07.01.2011

I added a review of the all you can eat buffet in the Aria and so felt I had to own up to this one too...
This buffet is apparently legendary in Vegas. Especially on a Sunday (free 'Champagne') we were on our way home that day so didn't partake in the fizz - thank the lord as whatever you used to win from the local fun fair in the park for getting two hoops over a bottle with a fiver elastic-banded to it was more like Champagne than this stuff seemed to be.
The queue is HUGE, go ask reception for two line passes, they gave us one.
The place is rammed with Americans who are ramming their faces with cheap fizz and "International" cuisine. It's OK. Just about. Wide selection. Free for all. Some things are good, some things are not so good. Presentation leaves a lot to be desired. All those people troughing huge plates of 'curry'chow mein and roast lamb on one plate, with a side of spag bol, just isn't my idea of legendary. Go if you must. But if you want to experience the phenomenon of 'all you can eat' Vegas, without feeling that you have just gone that tacky step too far, head next door to the Aria. Much better all round.

Now then, the last place I thought you'd ever see me (well after Las Vegas itself) is an all you can eat buffet. Ironic as it may sound we actually went there because the portions everywhere else were so un-appetisingly enormous (well except Picasso, bellagio - see sep review) that we just had to go somewhere where we could put a nice normal portion on our plates and eat it, rather than a plate of food that would feed a family of five for a week.
We were not holding out much hope. I have to say we were very pleasantly surprised! The value for money was exceptional (around £12-15) for a really decent standard of food and well cooked to boot.
The selection on offer ranged from sushi to roasts, to french and Indian, all pretty authentically cooked (a bit of a revelation for vegas!). We were having a day off the booze so cannot comment on the wine - but the wine inclusive deal was very reasonable.
The surroundings were pleasant, the selection of food utterly enourmous and there were not too many people. Probably the most decent meal we ate in Vegas, all in all. It must be very heavily subsidised by the casino - it is a fairly new, modern 5 star, so I think they need to get people in the casino.
Yes, I'd recommend this plce ( I can't believe I'm recommending an all you can eat buffet, but there you go, you have to hand it to them!).

OK, this was our treat at the end of our Honeymoon in the states. It is a 2 Michelin star restaurant. Apparently. It was VERY expensive. I have eaten in some good places in Europe that were pricey but coming in at £350 (yes pounds) for two, it's just not worth it. Actually, it's not worth a third of that. I don't know how they got those Michelin stars but it certainly wasn't up to European standards, nowhere near.
The menu is unimaginative, totally bog standard posh restaurant fare. The service (except one nice chap who got scowled at for chatting to us) was cold, dull and condescending - I know what foie gras is, though thanks for the automated explanation, yes I know that Riesling is a grape variety, cheers - and if I didn't I wouldn't want to be told by someone as ill informed as your good selves in a manner that made me feel ultra-thick!
Good points, nice view of the fabled Bellagio fountains, bar maid was nice enough.
This is an 'upscale' restaurant for people who have too much dosh and usually live on Burger King.
Only go if you have won so much money in the casino that you simply have to chuck some away. People keep asking if we lost money in Vegas - this was the only place that we could say we made a really misplaced bet.

makapyon i completely agree with you! picasso is the worst joke ever. i wonder how it was for them to buy the two michelin stars!

*Update - they have stopped doing the nice fresh salads in bowls, now there are just a couple and not very exciting, so I'm down grading this from 4to 3 stars. Guess they think they don't need to try so hard now they are established. I'd say you can get better value for money at pret!*
This place looks seriously expensive, but it's not bad for King's Rd. It is really special (if pretty small) they have lots of different salads and bread that you can mix and match and small peices of cake and cookies. It is super stylish - check out their plastic knives and forks (they'd almost look at home at a Buckingham palace dinner party!) and the tables are great - each one has head phones and an Ipod socket.
Good fun and very posh for sandwiches!! Have to say I prefer the chelsea branch to the one in town, it's funkier and has more choice!

Only go here if you need to be really near the station (as it is admittedly better than the two bars actually in the station) but it isn’t exciting and as it is a bit of a barn - big and busy can get very crowded. It’s alright but definitely not a place to centre a night out around. Though I guess visitors might like the painted ceilings.

Galvin at Windows - Mayfair

The view is really fantastic. Very romantic. Even more expensive!! The food was very good, was it worth the money? Now there’s a question, I’m not sure I have the answer to. The truth is some of it was amazing (oddly the things that I thought might be just OK) some of it was just OK (obviously good quality though, but then you’d expect no less). Maybe it’s all to do with expectation. Service was excellent and the waiter even helped in our game of trying to name at least 10 landmarks each from the stunning view (not that he was much cop at it. But it’s the taking part that counts, and all that).
There are deals that are available for this restaurant and although I can imagine the choice is very limited I have to say the difference in price is considerable so it is worth a shot for the view alone. I believe you can just head to the bar which is a sensible option - although don’t let the height go to your head - keep an eye on the tab!
I won’t say how much our meal cost, because frankly it’s just embarassing - feed a small African village for a week kind of thing. But I’d say it is worth it for a special occasion. Actually best make that a VERY special occasion!
