Costa Coffee - Colwyn Bay

I walked past Colwyn Bay's shiny new Costa Coffee at 8:30am on the day it opened and it was full of schoolkids.  I popped in at lunchtime to buy a coffee and it was full of schoolkids.  It seems they'll be hoovering up a reasonable proportion of the dinner money available in the Bay!

As for the place itself, well it's a typical Costa Coffee.  The same decor, same range, same prices as every other Costa.  There's nothing too wrong with it although it is a bit pricey compared to other coffee shops in the Bay so it waits to be seen how many grown ups will frequent the place once the novelty has worn off.

Revolution - Colwyn Bay

The recent double dip recession won't have come as a surprise to the residents of Colwyn Bay.   Over the last month or so the shutters seem to come down on a number of shops in the town centre.  It's therefore pleasing to see at least one new shop buck the trend by opening, even if it is one I'll almost certainly never make a purchase from.

Having taken the opportunity to browse the menswear section it's clear there's nothing here for anyone like me.  It's mainly cheap "designer" brands like Crosshatch and t-shirts displaying tacky slogans like "You Looked Better From Behind" or pictures of half naked young ladies. Now, nice as these pictures might be, they're not the sort of thing I really want emblazoned across my chest.  If I was eighteen years old and planning an evening out in the Prince Madoc then maybe they're but not exactly appropriate if you're, er my age, and planning an evening pushing a trolley around Tesco.

I think there's more chance of me winning the lottery (and I never buy tickets) than there is of me buying anything from this shop but I nonetheless wish them well and hope this unit stays occupied for some time to come.  If you're an eighteen year and a regular at the Prince Madoc then this shop is in the BayView Centre so go and check it out.

Sports Clearance - Llandudno

The "Sports Clearance" store in Llandudno is the former JJB Sports store.  When JJB closed down in 2012 this was one of the stores taken over by Sports Direct.  For about six months there was an old sheet with "CLOSING DOWN SALE" painted on it and all the stock was reduced to half marked price.  It was a real dumping ground, full of all sorts of stuff brought in from JJB stores that had closed as well as some old Sports Direct stuff.  The problem was it was pretty much randomly jumbled so it was very difficult to know where to look. 

It now has a more permanent sign over the door and is a bit more organised inside, although you do really need to spend at least half an hour searching out the bargains.  Over time they've been reducing many of the marked prices so although the signs still stay 50% off marked price you'll find a lot of stuff that effectively 75%+ off RRP.  You'll find not only plenty of sportswear and trainers but also cricket and golf  equipment and bikes.  There's almost certainly a bargain for everyone, the only problem is likely to be finding it!

The Floral Clock - Llandudno

The Floral Clock is part of Llandudno's latest attempt to cash in on it's possible links with Charles Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll.  It's a large clock sat in the open on the grass next to Prince Edward Square and just below the Cenotaph and is designed to look like the March Hare's pocket watch.  At present it isn't very floral although it's still spring so presumably that will change during the summer.  On the plus side it hasn't yet been vandalised and when I last looked was actually telling the correct time!

Swinton - Llandudno

I generally shop for insurance and the like on-line these days but I opted to take out car insurance with Swinton in part because it gives me the option of dealing face to face with someone in this office rather than having to wait half an hour in a queue in order to speak to someone in Mumbai.  Fortunately the premium (for me at least) was fairly competitive so I was happy to go with them.  When the policy was due for renewal I called into the office where they managed to sort out a better price for the new policy and also sorted me out with £30 cashback as a bonus. 

McDonald's Restaurants - Holyhead

Kingsland Road, Holyhead, Wales LL65 2HY

A small, run-of-the mill branch of McDonalds but conveniently placed being just off the end of the A55 and also easy walking distance from the town centre, railway station and ferry port.  Service is friendly and efficient and the food is bog standard McDonalds fodder.

I wish this shop had opened five or ten years ago when I was still interested in video games but nevermind, with the demise of Game'z this shop has every chance of success and hopefully will be here for years to come so even if I've missed out then my kids won't!  It's not as big as their store in Rhyl so it doesn't have the same range and choice but it's a good place for a browse nonetheless.

FatAndy I’d imagine rents are a lot higher in Llandudno. The shop in Colwyn Bay is in a central location so it should get a bit of passing trade, especially on market days in the Summer. I doubt you’d anything as cheap in a central location in Llandudno, at best you’d be looking at some quiet corner of Madoc Street.

I was also going to say that in Colwyn Bay they don’t have any competition, notably from HMV, but thinking about it Morrisons sell “Replay” DVDs for £2 each, Cash Generator sell second hand DVDs for £1.99 but they’re currently buy two get one free and also Blockbuster sell second hand DVDs and games so they actually have quite a bit of competition in the Bay.

Indy55 Yeah, you’re right there quite a bit of competition in the Bay, plus another 1 or 2 second hand shop’s you failed to mention. Hope they survive longer than Gamez.

The Games Cabin did pretty good business at Madoc Street, until it began giving more floor space to chairty shop goods rather than physical media. Games Exchange could do well there, with good signage and word of mouth, but I don’t think any of the current free units are big enough for them.

Asda Stores - Holyhead

The Asda store in Holyhead is quite small but it's conveniently located close to the town centre, the ferry port and the railway station.  If you're about to embark on a long ferry or train journey and want to grab some sandwiches and drinks to keep you going on your travels this store is as good as anywhere to stock up.

Pets At Home - Rhyl

This is a large shiny pet shop selling rabbits, rodents, fish, snakes, lizards, etc along with everything you'll ever need to care for any type pet.  There's also a dog grooming room at the back of the store.  Parking isn't a problem as the store is located in a quiet corner of a retail park.

Tesco Superstore - Prestatyn
