Anna Café - Budapest

Váci utca 5, V. District, 1052 Budapest

04.10.2009

Just what you'd expect at the tourism heart of any city ~ good but expensive coffee, served by surly, lazy, unfriendly staff. Avoid - there are so many other & nicer places....

Restaurant Le Girelier - St Tropez

Quai Jean Jaurès, 83990 St Tropez

01.10.2009

Perfect location, on the port, with fabulous food.

La colombe d'or - St Paul de Vence

1 place general de gaulle, entrée du village, 06570 St Paul de Vence

Simply superb.

Osteria - Budapest

Dohany utca 5, Budapest

Outstanding Italian restaurant in every respect.

Randall & Aubin - Soho

16 Brewer Street, Soho, London W1F 0SG

I like this rather crazy restaurant more than anywhere else in London.
Last autumn I was queuing (patiently, for me) outside for places to become free for 3 of us (and watching out for queue bargers intent on cheating, which the good-natured, hip and energetic staff were efficient at politely controlling) when one of the waiters came outside with a tray-full of glasses of chilled champagne for those of us waiting on the pavement ~ what a nice touch and good business!
I’ve only ever eaten shell-fish there, which is always fresh and perfectly prepared; its a small restaurant and it gets really busy, but the service is always attentive and humorous, whilst remaining professional; the wines are kept deliciously cold.
I can’t recommend it more highly.

Pizzeria Marzano - Budapest

Andrássy út 41, 1061 Budapest

15.06.2009

Its just Pizza Express in Budapest, on Andrassy. Service can be a bit reluctant; pizzas are standard fare. Nothing exceptional.

Menza Étterem és Kávézó - Budapest

Liszt Ferenc tér 2, 1061 Budapest

15.06.2009

Was there on Friday night; attractive design is retro; service was OK if a bit slow to get started (they had run out of glasses), rather indifferent food, although a good buzzy ambience.

Bed Beach - Budapest

Hajogyarisziget (boat yard island), 3rd District Budapest

14.06.2009

A summer-only night club, where you can enjoy rubbing shoulders with Budapest’s young and abundant Mafiosis. It’s a big and wide open type of a place and completely white; drinks are expensive (a Mojito was 4,500 HUF = €16) but the vibe is fun and the dance areas big enough so that you can either join a crush, or find some room. Worth going, for the dancing, and to observe :-)

Cresta Run - St. Moritz

St. Moritz

15.06.2009

The Cresta Run, celebrating its 125 anniversary in 2010, is a 1,212m long ice run, which starts in St Moritz and ends in Celerina, the next village along the Engadine Valley; the gradient varies between 2.8 to 1 (at its steepest point) and 8.7 to 1; it is one of the only toboggan runs in the world intended only for riding Skeleton toboggans.
The Run is organised by the St Moritz Tobogganing Club (SMTC); women are invited to ride on one day per season, as a guest of a member, it is otherwise a run on which only men may ride.
The season begins on 20th December, conditions permitting and ends on the first Saturday in March.
Beginners may attend the club and receive instruction on riding technique on most weekdays, excluding Wednesdays. On line booking is advisable: www.cresta-run.com

Konoba Mondo - Motovun

Barbacan 1, 52424 Motovun

10.06.2009

This is a charming, small, family-run place, with some of the finest food you can find in Croatia, and not expensive: pasta with truffles (a local speciality, sourced from the damp oak forest on the valley floor), excellent locally smoked ham, risotto, creamy polenta, good steaks, simple but pleasing wine from local growers, all served in a small and bright 'konoba’ (a small country-style single-room restaurant) with an open fire, making it a cozy place to linger in winter, as well.
They also have an outside terrace for summer dining.
The proprietor, Klaudio, who has lived in this beautiful fortified hill-town all his life, speaks good English and Italian, and is a wealth of knowledge about the area. Well worth a detour!
