A youth hostel where I spent nearly 3 weeks, so I know it well!!!! Bright blue and orange decor, the staff are welcoming and very nice, there is a kitchen in which everyone can store food in the fridge if they want, with access to a small living room (very handy for a quick dinner or breakfast with friends, without spending too much). Very clean bathrooms (sometimes there is a small queue for the shower), pleasant rooms (shame there aren't any curtains) with lockers that you can hire for 10 euros per night, impossible to find anything better! And the area is great... there is a small park right opposite, 2 underground stations, lots of bars, restaurants, nightclubs... It is one of the hippest areas of Berlin and one of my favourites!

Typical Parisian café, terrace very cool very nice in the summer, not much more to say, nothing to original
American Apparel - Louvre
31 Place du marché Saint Honoré, 75001 Paris
10.04.2009
American apparel is very fashionable nowadays, but I really do not understand what the fuss is all about… Plain zip jumpers, plain T-shits, leggins… all in impossible and unwaerable colours. So yeah, it’s good if you need a bright orange jumper or gold leggins, but nothing else! The people who only swear by this brand are usually dressed ridiculously or without originality. You can go there to find comfortable sports outfits, or sometime a cute little boat hoodie jumper (one always needs one). But you will probably find the same at H&M and cheaper as well.
X-Step - Kreuzberg
Tempelhofer Ufer 36, 10963 Berlin

A great center, small and welcoming, well equipped with really friendly people. A wide selection of dance classes (african, belly-dance, reggaeton, hiphip, jazz, ballet, streetdance, breakdance), martial arts classes (capoeira, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, kali sikaran) but also yoga, wrestling, pilates … and a fitness center with some machines. The prices are really affordable (30 euros a month for a class per week, 12 euros for a second class), nice and qualified teachers, a bar to have a drink. There are two parties per year for members to show what they’ve learnt.
Kunsthaus Tacheles - Mitte
Oranienburger Str. 54-56a, 10117 Berlin

If you’re going to Berlin, you HAVE TO go to Tacheles at least once. This place is unbelievable. It’s a 5 floor building owned by a Köln company that rents it to a communauty of independant artists for 1 euro per year. Don’t be scared by how it looks (wrecked and covered with graffiti), there are no drug dealers inside ! I did hesitate but it’s just a huge art gallery ! Artists are showing their work in different rooms. Obviously it’s only modern art and you should be prepared to see things you wouldn’t see anywhere else but I let you see for yourself. It looks like a squat and it’s great fun to visit just to see every single wall tagged. This place is of course very trendy (just like everything that looks a bit dodgy in Berlin). Inside there are 2 bars (one on the third floor with a beautiful view and big sofas full of holes, the other is on the heated terrace, with with big sofas also probably found in some dump, and also experimental movies showed on the white wall), a cinema, a theater, a concert hall next door belongs to the place and they put a beach outside when it’s summertime so you can sit on old tyres, on the sand in front of a bar-caravan… In a nutshell, it’s a great place !!
Chez Tania - Champs Elysées
43 Rue Ponthieu, 75008 Paris
01.03.2009
Here’s an institution !!! The music is quite surprising (hits from the 80’s, disco, rock, no electro, no house !)The club is owned by gay people who love fancy dresses so the atmosphere is quite crazy…The customers are between 20 and 35, rather trendy. The owners are unbearable. The twins, as they like to be called, are two handsome guys looking like Johnny depp in Pirates of the Caribbean but they’re just disdainful and bad-tempered. They wont let you in if you’re not with a regular or if you look like you’re about to drink a lot. But this place is still an institution ! Two floors, bar and sofas upstairs, dancefloor downstairs. The music is not the same ont the two floors. Be careful, the place is TINY (yes in Paris, the smallest is the most fashionable !!)There’s no admission fee but it’s very selective !
Niederegger Einkaufserlebnis, Café und Marzipan-Salon. - Lübeck
Breite Str. 89, Rathaus Markt, 23552 Lübeck
01.03.2009
Coffee, cappucino, cakes, everyhting here is Marzipan-based so in a nutshell you have to like it and it can get a bit too sweet … but it is the speciality and you should try ! Especially the Marzipan Baumkuchen, delicious ! You also have a shop where you can buy anything and everything marzipan-based !!!
Mirchi - Mitte - Mitte
Oranienburger Str. 50, 10117 Berlin
01.03.2009
If you’re outside the Mirchi, i really looks like a tourist-trap with big torches and waiters calling you, but at the end it isn’t ! It’s delicious and sophisticated for 10 euros a main dish. The decoration is magical, typical from Asia, their recipes are quite spicy, mostly Thai or Indian, with peanut sauce, rice, chicken, curry, coconut milk, ... It’s just brilliant, and you get a mango brandy on the house at the end of your meal!
KaDeWe - Schöneberg
Tauentzienstraße 21-24, 10789 Berlin
01.03.2009
The KaDeWe (KaufHaus des Westens) is to Berlin what Harrods is to London … a huge building, beautiful, 7 floors, and a different range on each floors (cosmetics, food, clothes…) It’s only famous brands and quite expensive … You’ll find international products you wouldn’t find anywhere else in Berlin… Good ideas for gifts. It’s a must see cause the building itself is just gorgeous. Go and see the food range, Impressive !!
