Edwards Restaurant - Halesworth

59a Thoroughfare, Halesworth, Suffolk IP19 8AR

30.10.2011

On the hunt for the perfect cooked breakfast in our town – Edwards comes pretty close! However, lacking is the Bubble&Squeak, and Ben likes chips with his fry up. That said, the fried mushrooms are perfect, the fried potatoes are excellent, and the locally sourced ingredients makes this so much more special (the Blythburgh bacon is particularly good!!)

Very reasonably priced, considering the quality of the produce.

Edwards has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very friendly :) Oh! And the tea is PROPERLY good tea, not just cheap tea bags in a mug. Bonus.

Seashell - Halesworth

My first take away as a new resident of Suffolk! And what a great choice. Seashell was busy went in – it’s only a little take away in a little town, but it’s clearly very popular. With only two members on hand to serve both take away and dine in guests, taking orders, frying and juggling payment, I think they did a sterling job. £6.50 got me medium cod (locally caught!), chips, mushy peas and a can of pop. I took it home and managed to finish the lot. Really delicious. I’ll have to have some serious self-restraint not to go there every night!

Always a safe bet if you’re after a bargain! Do a lot of home ware (crockery, etc) but not keen on the clothes they sell.

You can’t really go wrong with Spar can you? Nothing to report – as you would expect it :)

This shop had everything. Honestly, it’s so big, I was surprised to find it in a little town like Halesworth. Marvelous. And cheap, too!

The Manor Arms - Streatham

13 Mitcham Lane, Streatham, London SW16 6LQ

14.08.2011

I’d never been to the Manor Arms before the Streatham Knit Wits (a fortnightly knitting group) started meeting there. I have to say, I love it, and it is another of the few things I will really miss when I move out of London. The staff are always friendly and pleasant, they have a wide range behind the bar, and the space itself is brilliant.

The Manor Arms has had a refurb recently, and whilst I don’t know what it was like before, it looks marvellous now. It’s huge inside, with a fireplace that I imagine is lovely in the winter, and plenty of comfy chairs to sink into. I’ve never seen it properly busy (because I’ve only been on Tuesday evenings), but it has a lovely atmosphere. There is also a small beer garden at the back, but the chairs are a little less comfy out there…

The food looks fantastic, but it seems a little pricey. But who knows – it might be worth it. I can’t really comment as I’ve not had anything more than their cheese board!

Well worth a look in if you’re in the area – I wish it was moving with me!

The Bridge House - Little Venice

13 Westbourne Terrace Road, London W2 6NG

13.08.2011

All I remember about this pub is that it was crowded (popular?), hot, and expensive. That said, they do have a wide selection behind the bar. Food looked nice, but it was way too busy to get the attention of staff in order to order anything. You’ve been warned.

Massis - Marylebone

28 James Street, Mayfair, London W1U 1EW

13.08.2011

The food was wonderful, the service was not. In fact, I found the staff to be so flippant and frankly rude that I won’t be going back. Plenty of other good Middle Eastern restaurants around, where the staff actually care about their customers.

Hairway - Kelso

5 The Knowes, Kelso, Scotland TD5 7BH

13.08.2011

There are very few hairdressers nowadays that we do a simple dry trim and not charge through the nose for it. All I was is a straight inch off. THAT IS ALL. I was once quoted £50 for this privilege in a London salon. I mean… what the hell?

So imagine my relief at finding Hairway – a down to earth, local hairdresser, offering to dry trim both my and my other half’s hair, for only £8 each. In fact, she was done so quickly, she charged us only £10 for the pair of us. Bargainous.

Looks like a really old-fashioned salon, and seems to be the place the older ladies of Kelso frequent. The staff are charming and professional.

English Heritage: Norham Castle - Berwick-upon-Tweed

Norham Village, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland TD15 2JY

13.08.2011

A great little castle, if just for it’s very laid back appeal. Whilst it is English Heritage property, I don’t think I have ever seen this place staffed, and we have just walked in and out as we pleased! Lovely banks around the castle, and plenty of features to nose around. Yes, definitely don’t forget the camera – the view across Norham town is great!
