Nailstudio 43 - Schanze
Schulterblatt 43, Hamburg, 20357 Hamburg
17.03.2012
I’ve had long, natural nails for most of my adult life, but keeping natural nails in a good, presentable state is a whole lot of upkeep and a headache when they chip, split and break. I’ve always been curious about artificial nails and finally decided to go ahead and get them done – Qype recommended Nailstudio 43, so in I waltzed for my appointment and promptly asked to have my natural nail tips removed and replaced by new artificials.
I have to admit that Nailstudio 43 isn’t the cleanest establishment I’ve been to, but I’m used to the levels of hygiene employed at tattoo and piercing studios where everyone (hopefully) wears gloves and meticulously autoclaves every utensil. I’ve never been to a nail studio before, so was a little surprised that the same standards of cleanliness were not employed there as well.
After about an hour, I was the owner of a new set of nails. I really enjoyed observing the nail technician do her job, I imagine a lot of skill goes into trying to get a good-looking set of nail enhancements.
I can’t say anything about how long the nails last without lifting – we’ll have to wait and see – but from the reviews I’ve been reading, it’s about four weeks – which is already a lot less hassle than the upkeep of a set of long, natural nails.
I’ll certainly return and will recommend Nailstudio 43 to other first-timers as well.
Butcher's American Steakhouse - Rotherbaum
Milchstraße 19, 20148 Hamburg

One of the best steakhouses I’ve been to – and certainly the best I’ve been to in Hamburg.
I had a Carpaccio with pumpkin pesto, rucola and parmesan as a starter, a 200g (“ladies cut”) filet as the main course with a side of green beans and bacon. For dessert, a plate of chocolate mousse and brownies, garnished with red fruits.
A two-person meal dealt damage of about 150 euros. Considering how much I enjoyed my food, not a large price to pay. Certainly not a cheap restaurant (the starters alone are close to 20 euros a plate, the 200g filet was 35 euros, the dessert 12) but well suited for a once-in-a-while indulgence.
Recommended for those who like meat and aren’t afraid to get creative with their eating.
La Cuccina - Eilat

Really nice italian restaurant on the Royal Beach promenade in Eilat. Affordable dishes, good menu selection and friendly service.
I had the artichoke fettucini, which was very good. The panna cotta for dessert was the best I’ve had so far.
One star off for the freezing A/C and being seated next to a door which was consistently left open, requiring me to get up out of my seat several times during the meal to shut it and prevent a draft and noise from wafting in.
Overall, well recommended. If you’re in Eilat looking for a good italian restaurant, I’d be hard pressed to believe there’s anything better than this in the boardwalk area.
Tip: Non-kosher restaurant! Awesome!
Dalia Hotel - Eilat
North Beach, 88000 Eilat

This hotel is rather mediocre. Service personnel were very friendly but the hotel itself is a bit dodgy and in a state of disrepair.
In the room, the bathroom wall tiles were cracking off and the wooden ring around the bath was chipping. The A/C stopped working for an entire night and there were no sockets in the bathroom. The breakfast at the Duda hotel nearby was not very good – cold scrambled eggs and nothing to put on bread but margarine.
The straw that broke the camel’s back came after injuring my foot on a rock outside the hotel. I limped up to the reception, asking for some assistance – I was told the first aid kit was out of reach after 17:00, since it was locked in the pool area. I asked: “What do you do in an emergency?” and was told: “we call an ambulance”.
The location is fantastic and with a little bit of dosh, they could transform this place into an awesome boutique hotel. But for $114 a night at it’s current state of maintenance, I’d expect more. I won’t be returning, nor recommending this hotel to others.

Went here for lunch after hearing about it continuously from colleagues, who frequent this place for the schnitzel. Restaurant was basically empty at 12:30, we were served promptly and the food arrived in a timely manner.
Unfortunately, my schnitzel was not significantly bigger than Chicken McNuggets. Honestly - for 6.50 you can get a decent sized schnitzel at several other places within a 500m radius from this restaurant.
Besides the schnitzel, they have a dish of the day - my colleague's beef goulash looked really nice, so I'll surely come back here to try something other than the schnitzel. If you're in it for the meat n' crumbly, look elsewhere.
Garuda Asiatische Spezialitäten Lieferservice - Eimsbüttel

Ordered on a Friday night, since they were the only ones open after 23:00. Delivery took 50 minutes, probably some of the blandest sushi I've ever eaten. Really a huge disappointment, won't be ordering from them again. Really, there's nothing worse than bad sushi.
The only reason they get two stars from me is because the glass noodle soup was really nice.
Rainer Hochhaus - Rotherbaum
Dillstrasse 21, 20146 Hamburg

(mis à jour le 08.02.2011)
The Rainer Hochhaus is an old, large apartment building which is used for temporary, furnished housing arrangements. The building has a LOT of apartments in it, considerably more than one would care to guess by looking from the outside. There are about 60 flats here, some of which are accessible only from elusive side entrances. I really like the stairwell and the hallways here, they remind me of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe".
The apartments in the building vary in size. Most are 30-60 sq/m and fully furnished. Contracts are 3-4 months minimum (but open end) and prices are a little higher than your standard rent-a-place and do not include electricity or internet in the base price.
As mentioned, the apartments are fully furnished (mine even had pots n' pans and I assume the rest do, too), however the one-room arrangements do not have a separate couch/bed arrangement, but a sofa bed. I had to go to Ikea for a 2-seater sofa and a bedside table.
The area around the complex is great - tons of cafes, restaurants and even a cinematheque.
Living here is a good option if you're looking for something immediate and don't mind paying a little extra for the comfort and convenience. There are often apartments available here and the area is great on weekdays and weekends.
Brodpann - Altstadt
Brandstwiete 40, 20457 Hamburg

A standard German standing-imbiss with a long list of variations on the same dish and prices to suit the worker's pocket. Dishes are served promptly and food tastes a bit bland.
This place looks and feels like it would be a outer-party lunchtime eatery in George Orwell's universe. All it's missing would be a view-screen mounted to the wall, displaying the face of Big Brother and an announcer reporting that chocolate rations have again been reduced by 10%.
"Who are we at war with, again?"
"With Eastasia. Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."
2 stars for an unremarkable lunchtime experience.
Old MacDonald American Diner & Sportsbar - Eimsbüttel
Stellinger Weg 33, 20255 Hamburg

I'm always on the lookout for that great burger, and the offerings at Old MacDonald make my list as some of the best I've had in the city.
I'm not a sports fan and don't normally hang around in sports bars., so luckily I managed to get here when there were no games on. I ordered the double cheeseburger which was smothered in cheese, certainly the cheesiest burger I've ever had. I'm a huge cheeseburger fan, but this was a bit too much for me. I'll probably get the regular cheeseburger next time around.
Interesting experience was when displaying the Qype voucher - apparently, they don't accept the mobile voucher and don't make note of this anywhere in the Disclaimer. Thankfully, they decided to make an exception for us - but I'd hope they'd make potential customers aware of such a large "but...".
Overall, good experience - good burgers and friendly service. Would recommend it - but don't order the double cheeseburger unless you really, really, really love mountains of cheese! :D
Steakhaus Hopi - Harvestehude
Oberstrasse 3, 1min zu Fuss von der U-Bahn Hoheluft, 20144 Hamburg

Once in a while, one simply wants a good steak. After being a vegetarian for a year (and previously spending my time with either fellow vegetarians or kosher-keepers), I had very little experience with Hamburg's selection of meat. After much deliberation, our party of three decided to forego the ide of an upscale steak joint for Hopi - a much recommended, affordable steakhouse in Hoheluft-Ost/Harvestehude.
Service was a bit slow to start with, but our meals arrived quickly. I had a "Hopi Steak", which was 8.90 for a 200g argentinian beef steak, a baked potato and a piece of garlic bread. The meat was okay - a solid slab of beef, but nothing exceptional. I found it very "gummy", hard to cut and chew. I'm not a meat connoisseur, so perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about.
I finished the meal off with a very yummy tartufo.
Overall, I had a good, solid experience at Hopi and I'll be glad to come back. The worth for money is quite good, I'd recommend this for anyone who'd like a laid-back steak dinner in the neighborhood at an affordable price.
For me, my quest for a really great steak continues.
