Morrisons - Édinbourg
Gyle Shopping Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 9JU
20.11.2008
This branch of Morrisons is located in the Gyle Shopping Centre and is one of the two “anchor” stores there, the other being Marks & Spencer.
It is a very useful branch of Morrisons I find - I can do lots of shopping in other stores and finish off with my weekly shop here.
There is plenty of parking and the store is large. At the front there is a dry cleaning stand, and also a cafe. I am a big fan of Morrison’s cafes but be warned, this one can get particularly busy at peak periods and you may have to wait a while for hot food.
The store itself has an excellent selection of fresh fruit and vegetables at the entrance and as you wander round you will find a great choice of grocery items on offer and a butcher, fishmonger and pie counter.
This store has a fairly decent selection of non-food items too, including a dedicated section for games, CDs and DVDs, along with a large magazine and book section.
There is also a fairly decent selection of homeware available here including bed linens, small domestic appliances such as irons and kettles, cooking utensils and crockery.
This Morrisons also has a petrol station and is well worth a visit if you are shopping at the Gyle Centre in Edinburgh.
ainslie park swimming - Édinbourg
Edinburgh, Scotland EH5 2HF
19.11.2008
Ainslie Park is a sports centre located just off the Ferry Road in northern Edinburgh.
The swimming pool is one of the better swimming facilities in Edinburgh and I have to say I do like it for its functionality.
The pool is 25 metres in length and is wide enough to permanently have 4 lanes cordoned off for lane swimming and beginners. Sometimes these lanes are out of bounds for the many swimming classes available here, or for aqua aerobics.
The changing area is unisex and there are 3 large family changing cubicles, which I find very useful when I visit with my daughter.
The pool is only deep in the middle which means when you do a length you start in shallow water and end in it. I find this quite nice and it makes it easier to take a rest between lengths if, like me, you are unfit!
There is a small diving area in the middle where the water is deep but there are no diving boards.
I do find the water can be quite cold in this pool compared to others in Edinburgh but that is a minor gripe.
I also find the staff can be a little offhand and not always particularly helpful. The pool can also get very crowded and I have seen some particularly bad behaviour go unchecked by the attendants which is offputting for the majority.
These are minor points however I would suggest trying to use this pool at offpeak times if you just want a nice swim in peace.
Dalry Swimming Centre - Édinbourg
29 Caledonian Crescent, Midlothian, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 2AL
19.11.2008
The Dalry Swimming Centre is located just off the Dalry Road in Edinburgh. It is a short walk from Haymarket station.
The pool is a refurbished Victorian one and it is actually very pleasant.
The changing area is unisex and my one complaint is the fact there is only one family changing room. As I visit with my daughter a lot, this causes problems as she needs assistance in the changing rooms.
The main changing area is upstairs from the pool and there are lots of lockers to use to leave your valuables and clothing there.
The pool itself is 25 metres long and is ideal for a quiet swim. I rarely find this pool to be too busy, probably because it is slightly off the beaten track and also because it is virtually impossible to park a car outside unless you have the relevant residents’ permit. As a result most people either walk here or take a bus.
The pool usually has a few lanes specifically for lane swimming and I find the lifeguards here to be particularly helpful. They have suggested play sessions for my daughter and are very pleasant.
There is a small sauna next to the pool which I haven’t tried. There is also a gym upstairs which I also have yet to try but have heard good things about.
This is a great swimming centre in the heart of Edinburgh that is open to all.
Woolworths - Édinbourg
170-174 Constitution Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 6AE
19.11.2008
This branch of Woolworths is situated in Leith in the north of Edinburgh.
This is a particularly useful branch of the store as there is parking here and also a plentiful supply of buses travelling all over the city.
The store is quite large and has an extensive DVD, CD and games section and sells games consoles too.
There is also a large homeware section which has kitchenware, tools, and other goods for the home.
The children’s clothing section is excellent and has clothing for children from newborn size up to around age 12. This section is particularly good in the summer for “back to school” items and there is also a good selection of kids footwear.
No Woolworths would be complete without the toy section and this branch is no different, with a great selection of toys to keep children of all ages happy.
There is also a large confectionary area with the obligatory pick n mix and lots of boxes of chocolates and of course Christmas confections for this time of year.
This is a great branch of Woolworths and in the absence of a branch on Princes Street, the Leith branch is easy to get to from the city centre if you need to visit a store.
Dynastic - Benidorm
Avenida Ametlla de Mar 0, 03503 Benidorm
19.11.2008
I stayed at the Dynastic Hotel in Benidorm in May this year.
The hotel is located in the newer, Rincon de Loix part of Benidorm, and is about a 10 minute walk from the sea.
The hotel offers half board, full board and all inclusive packages and I booked this as an all inclusive hotel.
I am glad I did given how awful the Euro to pound rate has been this year!
The hotel has a large marble lobby which offers free WiFi for your laptop. This isn’t available in rooms so its useful to be able to bring your laptop down to surf if need be.
The hotel rooms are spacious and modern and have large balconies. We found our room to be comfortable although the shower was a little temperamental.
Food was of a high standard - I didn’t have one meal I didn’t enjoy and there was plenty of variety.
The hotel has two pools - a kids pool and the “regular” pool. Both are pretty small but there were plenty of sunbeds available.
Entertainment was fun but you had to want to get involved to make it so! The entertainment staff were very good and made an attempt to get to know the guests.
We had a great time at this hotel and I would highly recommend it.
Massimo Dutti - Benidorm
Calle Gambo 10, 03503 Benidorm
19.11.2008
Massimo Dutti is the more upmarket sister of fashion chain Zara.
I visited the store in Benidorm this summer whilst I was on holiday and I was very impressed.
The store is beautifully laid out with items neatly folded for your perusal or hanging up on expensive hangers. The store has has dark wood desks where the tills are situated and staff are immaculately turned out.
Clothing is quite conservative, usually with a little fashion twist, and while it isn’t particularly cheap, it won’t break the bank either.
Sizes are a little on the small side, with a UK 16 being the largest they stock.
I found the clothing I purchased here to be well made and beautifully presented. The quality here is definitely superior to that of Zara.
Service was excellent - staff all spoke English fluently and were unobtrusive but helpful.
I would definitely go back to this Massimo Dutti if in Benidorm again.

I have used this dental practice for the past 4 years and am very happy with the service provided.
When I first joined the practice as an NHS patient, there were two dentists working here, but now there is only one. This means that sometimes you can have a delay waiting for an appointment but if you have a genuine emergency you will be seen urgently.
The practice is located in the north of Edinburgh in the Boswall part of the city. Several bus routes pass by and there is unrestricted parking in the vicinity.
When you visit for a check-up you will also get a scale and polish. The dentist is very reassuring and methodical and I have had a filling here and found it a bearable experience!
The dentist is also very good with children and my daughter has no fear of coming to the dentist every 6 months for her check-up.
The practice no longer sends out reminders for check-ups but you can make an appointment for 6 months ahead when you have finished your check-up which I always do to ensure I don’t forget and let too much time pass by.
A nice little dental practice in North Edinburgh.
West End Medical Practice - Édinbourg
21 Chester Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 7RF
19.11.2008
The West End Medical Practice is an NHS practice located on Chester Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s West End.
The practice has several doctors and as I am not too fussy so long as a doctor listens to me, I have seen all the doctors who work here and have been impressed with all of them.
The practice also has two nurses on duty who are very friendly and professional. I recently had cause to use the nurse on a regular basis to have dressings changed following an accident and they made a painful and distressing experience one that was actually bearable.
The practice also has a Diabetes Clinic which operates every week and ensures those who have diabetes are seen regularly without having to go to hospital.
My only complaint about the practice is sometimes it can be nigh on impossible to get through to them on the phone. This isn’t too much of a problem for me as I live close by and can go to reception to make an appointment but if you need a doctor’s appointment in a hurry and cannot do this it can be quite frustrating.
Also, the surgeries are held in the basement of the building, which means people with mobility problems struggle to get to see a doctor. Some surgeries are held on the ground level but there are still stairs at the front entrance.
Overall however this is a good practice and I have been very impressed with the service the staff provide.
NatWest Cash Machine - Édinbourg
6 George Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2PF
19.11.2008
It seems a little strange reviewing a cash machine - surely they are all the same? Well yes, that’s true, but in Scotland most cash machines dispense Scottish banknotes.
So if you go to a Bank of Scotland machine, you will get Bank of Scotland banknotes. Go to Lloyds TSB or Abbey and they won’t dispense their own notes but they will dispense Scottish banknotes.
Now if you are in Scotland on a visit and plan on spending all your money in Scotland then Scottish banknotes are fine. They are even legal tender in England, and major retailers will accept them in England, or any high street bank will change them.
When they become a problem is if you try to change them at a Bureau du Change overseas - a problem I have sadly learned to my cost.
So this is where this cash machine becomes very useful - because it dispenses English banknotes!
If you are a traveller or are heading somewhere you may need English banknotes you can use this machine safe in the knowledge you will get banknotes with the Queen’s head on them.
Another thing that’s great about this machine is the fact you can use it to top up your Pay as You Go mobile phone!
Craighall Garage - Édinbourg
Craighall Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 4RU
19.11.2008
Craighall Garage is situated in the Trinity area of Edinburgh, in the north side of the city.
The garage is a Ford dealer and specialist, but I have only used the company for garage services.
I use Craighall Garage for my annual service and have found the service I received to be of a high standard. Unlike other garages I have used, Craighall Garage does not suggest my bill will be very low and then call me with “urgent” work that needs to be done and will bump up the cost.
I also use them for my MOT and have found them to be efficient - if I drop my car off to them around 8.00 am it will be ready for me a couple of hours later.
I have also found the staff here to be particularly good - they don’t patronise me and are upfront about prices and how long a job will take to do, no matter how big or small.
If you are in need of a reliable garage in north Edinburgh, I would recommend Craighall Garage.
