Bell's Diner - Bristol

1-3 York Road, Bristol BS6 5QP

01.12.2007 (mis à jour le 30.11.2010)

If you eat here you'll find that Bell’s Diner are really serious about food. It absolutely gorgeous, but quite avant garde - like scallop chop suey and trout with liquorice sabayon. All food is cooked to perfection, and the service is excellent. The price is quite high (up to £20 for a main course) but really worth it for the quality of the food!

It's a small place so it feels nice and cosy, but you'll have to wait for a while for a table if you haven't booked. They'll give you free olives and bread while you wait, so it's not all bad. :)

Spyglass BBQ & Grill - Bristol

Lightship Welsh Back, Bristol BS1 4SB

02.11.2007 (mis à jour le 23.05.2008)

First thing - this place is only open in the summer because it’s on a boat and I’m guessing the heating is too expensive to run during the winter.
The food is really great, and there’s a lot of choice on the menu, especially for vegetarians. I’m not a vegetarian but I always go for the veggie dishes there because they’re so good.
The service is pretty good, but if you want something to nibble on before the main course then let them know that’s you’re intention, otherwise they’ll bring everything at the same time.
It’s a beautiful place to eat since it feels really open and you can see the gorgeous old houses and the river when you’re there.

Packert Butchers - Bristol

230 Cheltenham Road, Bristol BS6 5QU

15.02.2008

The self-styled 'sausage king' (and who am I to disagree?), Packaert Butchers offers fantastic prices on lovely fresh meat. There opening hours are a little odd, in that it's sometimes closed on weekday mornings, and closes for staff holidays once in a while, but if you catch this little gem open, there are so many good deals, you could cook an absolute banquet for 5 people for under a tenner!

Bristol Sausage Shop - Bristol

28-30 The Glass Arcade, St Nicolas Markets, Bristol BS1 1LJ

15.02.2008

Lovely sausages made from pork, lamb, beef, venison and buffalo. At lunch times, you can get a double sausage sandwich for £2.50, which is a filling and tasty option, or you could go for an even better deal of two sausages, mash and gravy for just £3.50. Mmmmm! The service is nice and friendly too.

Meat,Poultry & Delicatessen T & P.A Murray - Bristol

153 Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7 8BA

15.02.2008

My, there are some nice people who spend their days cutting up flesh. This is how all delicatessens should be: very friendly, speedy service and fantastic produce. On one side of the shop is a large meat counter (I can't recommend the sausages and handmade burgers enough), and opposite is a counter rammed with delicious cheeses, olives, and tapas. The wall in between is shelved with great pickles, chutneys, vinegars, oils, and sauces.

On saturdays the shop barbecues their own burgers for £1.50, which is a great deal. Expect a queue!

Gardners Patch - Bristol

159 Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7 8BA

15.02.2008

Wonderful, brilliant, super fruit and veg at incredible prices. Fresh, too, unlike what you get at the supermarkets.

If Gloucester Road is to effectively stave off the rise and rise of faceless yet 'convenient' supermarkets, consumers need to realise just how good places like Gardners Patch really are. Yes, you will have to walk about ten doors up from Sainsbury's, or down from Tesco's, but believe me, it's worth it.

Some great deals in there lately have been beautifully ripe avocados for 25p each, a large bag of rocket for 65p, and juicy clementines for about 10p each. Wonderful, brilliant, super.

Marks & Spencer Simply Food - Bristol

Avon Meads, St Phillips Causeway, Bristol BS2 0SP

15.02.2008

Great quality manufactured food, as always, from M&S, this store is great for pre-cinema stocking up, or if you don't want to "eat" at McDonald's! There is a good selection of wine and 'food-to-go', but it is pretty bare on fresh raw ingredients, because most people go in there just to stock up on a few tasty treats. Look out for the caramelised onion pickle - I challenge anyone to say that Branston is better!

The Rising Sun - Bristol

86 Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7 8BN

31.01.2008

With fantastic prices for students, this bright yellow pub attracts a young crowd, as well as a few older regulars. There are a few pool tables available, as long as you put a returnable deposit of £2 for the cues/white ball. There is a video jukebox, couches, lots of round tables and bright, neon lighting. The staff are lovely and helpful, and there is a good atmosphere on match days.

The Bay Horse - Bristol

St. James Barton, Bristol BS1 3LT

31.01.2008

The Bay Horse sits unapologetically in its garish beige cladding (for beige can be garish - go there!), between the bus station and the start of Broadmead. It's utterly uninspired, the kind of place I'd take a personal insurance advisor, and at the same time makes me thankful not to know one. Large windows make it more uncomfortable to sit in quietly, as people can look in as they walk past, and there's no sense of separation between in the pub and out on the faceless streets of central Bristol. Apart from that garish beige.

The Pipe & Slippers - Bristol

118 Cheltenham Road, Bristol BS6 5RW

31.01.2008

The Pipe and Slippers is a lovely, cosy sort of place, where you can choose from a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and generally escape the hubbub of Stokes Croft. There are pub games, such as chess and backgammon, available, and you are always greeted with a cheery smile. The punters range from young and trendy types to university professors to builders, and so is pretty much a cross section of the street outside, such is the broad appeal of the place. There is a real fire, comfy seats and tables, and a dim-lit atmosphere that's perfect for chilling out before or after a heavy night on the town.
