Well, I’m pleasantly surprised! I haven’t stayed here for a while as it was as described. Bleak. Rooms were all blue and white, tired decor and Orange juice that tasted of the powder from whence it came. No more! New design, lots of colour, the hallways smell of new carpet and the orange juice was REAL! I’m guessing a major refit within a very recent time. It isn’t cheap for an HIE but I’d be happy to stay again. Especially as there are so many great restaurants nearby!

Lovely meal with some truly fantastic flavours! I had a fish starter and a Nepalese main course with king prawns, both were very tasty, but I was very glad of the sparkling mineral water! Totally full on the two above mentioned plus a plain pilau rice and the traditional poppadom and pickles. Phew!

Not far from the station, it’s a fairly decent place. My room is the old Master bedroom, and although has an added en suite, they haven’t wrecked the original ceiling! I ate in the lounge area, and my waitress was nice and friendly. She called me Doll (double L pronounced W) and was polite and attentive. I was the only person there though. I could still catch the dulcet tones of other guests I. The bar, although there was plenty of swearing it was quiet enough. My room is really nice with loads of space. Apparently the old master bedroom. I’m working do no time to explore, but the Wallace monument is a mere stones throw away. My meal of steak was lovely and at £10.99 including chips, salad, coleslaw, tomato, mushrooms and onion rings was totally filling! Nom nom n :-) I’d stay again.

I had a spot of difficulty getting to this hotel. According to Google I came out of the station and turned left and could walk in about a mile. However, it was pitch black, no pavement and no street lighting, and when I got to where Google sent me there was a pub called The Drty Habit, and a couple of bemused locals. They said I was completely in the wrong location and it was 20mins the other way!
I rang a taxi.
Hotel itself was fine. Strange room numbering policy though, I had to go past all the 200’s to get to my room in the 100’s, but the room itself was pretty nice! I slept well after having to throw myself into several hedges on the first part of the journey.
In the restaurant my main course was very nice, but my dessert….well…when they say “cheeseboard” I would hope for slighlty more than a hunk of chedder and a few grapes! See pic. Very disappointed.
It is, by the way, now called the Mercure Maidstone, but I think it may have been Great Danes or something due to the dog statues outside.

Well…. I liked it! Everyone very friendly, wine of a nice temperature, steak as ordered, GIANT chips and a very tasty starter of mixed leaves, asparagus, mangetout and feta. And, the starter is free on a Monday and Tuesday if you order from the Grill menu! Result

Check in ok, room ok, waiter dreadful, food passable if you count the salmon, but the cheese platter had tiny slivers of Cheshire, something with Cranberries and feta? Nothing local. Barmaid terrible, I was an inconvenience. And I was almost alone in the place. For where it is it should be 10 times as good. Maybe it was a bad day. Sunday. Just been informed feta may actually be local! Hmmmmmm…..

Lovely tasty simply delicious food, with a modern twist. My mixed meze plate had all the important things: tabouleh, hummus, stuffed vine leaves etc. That and a side salad, and I have a very healthy meal! My Taste card meant it was half price too! FTW!

If you live even remotely close to this restaurant, go there! I chose a salmon dish from the concise and interesting menu with mushroom pilau rice and a garlic nan. The latter had sliced onion and garlic sprinkled over instead of the baked form. The salmon was juicy and tender with a gorgeous sauce and chives laid on top. Pretty as a picture! The chef introduced himself beforehand, and asked what I thought afterwards, which was a lovely touch. If I’m in the area again, I’ll be back!

Nice room, food nothing to write home about though. Staff a little over eager (they asked me 6 times how my meal was). My olive oil and bread arrived after my starter. No great shakes, and plenty of other places nearby which are better priced and better quality.

I can’t believe I’ve walked passed this place hundreds of times, but have never been in! Fantastic choice of food on the buffet all very fresh and tasty, and excellent service with a smile. I love being asked how I enjoyed the food, as it shows a genuine passion. I’ll be back very soon, I’m sure :-)
